In this paper we explain how the content of traditional and digital signs heavily depends on the context in which the sign is seen. This is followed by a comparison of the properties of traditional and digital signs, in which we show that digital signs enable us to exploit many proporties that signs have, in particular context adaptivity and indexicality.
